There's a view expressed by the eminent Canadian photographer Jeff Wall, which I take to be a fairly standard ideal in documentary architectural photography: namely, "to make a building understandable to someone who has not been to visit it." In the example Wall discusses – his photograph of the Dominus Winery in California, by Herzog &#38; de Meuron – he sought to convey the relationship of the building's form, materials and colour to those of the land and the highly structured layout of the vineyard. Sometimes I may aim at such an outcome in my photography. However, in this series my interest is in seeing a character – an emotional mood, feeling, or posture – in the building, possibly one which may not be readily apparent to those who visit it. The specific character in question is unique to the photograph: some buildings conveying a markedly different mood or posture when seen from different angles and in different lighting conditions. Such character that interests me ranges from the sublime to the spiky, from the serene to the erotic.</description>

The Shard is a building of immense scale and commercial ambition. Architectural photography usually celebrates the culmination of such ambition with images of pristine completion. By contrast, what I’ve found most interesting about the Shard, is the progress of its construction.

The photographs here are a selection from an ongoing project documenting the intrusion of the Shard into the London skyline. The thrust of its priapic concrete became most pronounced above the surrounding buildings in the autumn of 2010. Its once domineering neighbour, Guy's Hospital tower, rendered subservient; now a cute-Brutalist, pet-like accessory. Steelwork, encroaching from below, appeared at once skeletal and web-like, rapidly enmeshing the trapped core. This totem of exorbitance intrigued with its inadvertent, untimely imagery of decay; tower crane vultures picking at the gestating carcass.

As time passed, the paradoxical impression of entropy in construction has been gradually replaced with the immaculate (from a distance) blade of glass, gleaming (again, from a distance) in the twilight.

I've attempted to convey a sense of ambivalence in the series considered as a whole. There's an inevitable sense of menace in structures which dwarf humans to such an extent. The shroud of mist, or uplit cloud emphasise the distance between the ever-narrowing upper levels and the population confined to the ground. As a symbol of capitalism's tendency toward income disparity, it's fairly apposite. The gleam (seen from a distance) or slightly reptilian sheen (seen from closer-to) either side of sunrise or sunset – unique to the Shard among tall buildings, at least in central London – seduces.

The series is photographed on 5x4 Kodak Portra 400 &#38; 160 NC, Fuji Provia 100F, and Ilford HP5.

Geometry + Geology is an exploration of the formal and expressive affinities between Brutalist architecture and glaciated rock formations in northern England. The particular similarities I want to depict are the sense of sublime scale and monolithic bleakness. The rough, weather-stained face of the shuttered concrete resembles the irregularities found in the erosion-scarred terrain of mountain rock. The darkness of the material in wet and grey weather matches that of the frequently dour conditions of the mountains. The shadowy nooks and crevices inspire trepidation and invite exploration. In The Seven Lamps of Architecture, Ruskin writes of the significance of ‘power’ (or the sublime) in architecture, citing the epic, uninterrupted wall, the ‘precipice’, as the archetypal expression of abstract power. The effect of severe, unyielding magnitude also carries with it a sense of melancholy in its solitude. The Brutalist buildings photographed exemplify this sense of imperviousness: solitary, stark, with intersecting planes conveying a sense of geological force and weight. The geometric compositions add to a sense of abstraction. There are no obvious symbolic forms introduced by the architects. The geometry is strong, but irregular. The buildings, considered as wholes, do not have lines of symmetry; again, suggesting a comparison with mountain rock.

The series is photographed on 5x4 Ilford HP5 &#38; FP4, drum scanned, and printed on fibre-based silver gelatin paper by Metro Imaging in London.

The conventional view is that infrastructure installations (highways, railways, energy conduits, sewerage, etc) are purely utilitarian structures. We are led to assume that no thought went into creating a particular aesthetic character for them; if one was created, it was by accident, inherent in the nature of pragmatic materials and forms. Perhaps when they were first built, items of massive infrastructure (pylons, flyovers, etc.) may have seemed sublime to much of the general population. Pristine piers and slabs of concrete would have glowed in the sun – even in Britain. As it has aged, stained by water and discoloured by oxidation, the glow has turned to a glower. Any novelty in immense scale has long since worn off, presenting instead an air of menace – particularly given its proximity to the humbler-scale abodes of everyday urban life. This sense of menace is of course only partly a visual one – one that is accentuated by the intensity of local pollution (whether air, noise, light, or electromagnetism) generated by its use.

Yet despite this poor public image, I find tremendous aesthetic possibility in such places. The aesthetic character I find in the flyovers, for example, is one of bold, forceful geometry. In terms of resemblances, the interpenetrating road decks suggest a kind of geological coitus, or the choreographed writhing of some giant igneous reptile. Alternatively, their underbellies create dank, shadowy caverns, a quasi-subterranean world beneath the beast stalking above. The effect is an expression of the sublime, an awe inspired by the immensity, hardness of surface, velocity-laden lines, and dramatic shadow play, an underlying unease (if not terror) that this thing is unconcerned for the vulnerability of our fragile bodies.
